HOW TO SELL THROUGH AN AUCTION
When you consign goods to auction at Cuttlestones, whether for individual items or a complete house clearance, a receipt will be issued to the vendor for the items that are to be sold. Our full Terms and Conditions are listed on the reverse of this receipt. Vendors are issued with a personal Account Number, by which the goods are tracked through sale. In due course, the goods are placed into the appropriate sale, with an estimate as to the expected price to guide buyers.
If items are included in one of our Fine Art and Antique sales, vendors receive prior written notification of the sale, together with the guide and any reserve. This allows an opportunity to make any alterations to the details of each lot before the sale.
Due to time constraints, written notifications are not issued for weekly General Sales, but guides and reserves can be discussed and agreed at the time of consignment.
Payment, less commission charges, is made directly to the vendor by post, between 14-21 days after the date of sale.
There is no minimum charge. £1 per lot entry fee and 15% commission on the balance thereafter.
We do not charge for insurance, cataloguing or photographs.
All charges are plus VAT.
HOW TO BUY THROUGH AN AUCTION
Buying at auction is an extremely simple, exciting and rewarding process. Our advice would be to attend the pre-sale viewing, purchase a catalogue which gives the full run down of the lots in the auction with guide prices where applicable. At the viewing there will be an opportunity to talk to the auction staff and take your time viewing the lots in which you are interested before attending the actual auction.
When attending the auction you will need to register in the auction office and it is advisable to take a form of recognized identification such as a drivers license or utility bill. This will enable the office staff to verify your identity and you can then pay by personal cheque if needed.
Once the auction has commenced it is advisable to find a position where the auctioneer can be clearly seen and then when the lot comes up in which you are interested then make a clear bid to the auctioneer. Do not worry about scratching your nose as only obvious bids will be taken by the auctioneer! If you are lucky enough to be successful with your bid then all you need to do is pay in the office and simply collect your lot from the saleroom.
If you are unable to attend the auction it is possible to enter a commission bid where the auction house will bid on your behalf up to your maximum bid.
Another option is to use telephone bidding where a member of the auction staff will ring you approximately 5 lots before your lot and you can then bid over the telephone. Please note this option is not always available on the lower priced lots.
A Buyers Premium of 15% plus vat will be added onto your bill so please take this into consideration when bidding.
