West Midlands auction house Cuttlestones is fielding a particularly strong catalogue for its Friday 11th April Specialist Collectors’ Auction with star performances expected from lots in a number of sections.

One of the most interesting lots in the sale is a WWII Japanese Officer’s Katana. The traditional sword boasts a blade length 63cm, brass tsuba with cherry blossom decoration and comes alongside a metal scabbard with leather combat cover. Expected to generate interest from collectors of militaria as well as from bidders in Japan, it carries an estimate or £400 - £600.

Another particularly interesting set of lots stem from a single collection of autographs that has been split into 14 distinct lots and feature some very well-known stars of the stage and screen. One of the albums features autographs including Laurel and Hardy, Shiley Bassey, Lena Horne, Jack Warner, Ken Dodd and others, and is expected to fetch in the region of £150 - £250. Another includes examples from Vanessa Redgrave, Leonard Rossiter, Ronnie Barker, Dennis Waterman, John Thaw, Peter Sallis, Barbara Windsor, James Hunt, Ginger Rodgers and others, and is expected to fetch £100 - £200.

The books section of the sale also contains some very exciting lots, including a 450 year old Latin bible that, despite missing the title page (but bearing date 1566 on first page) and four folding tables with some loss – is expected to achieve around £200 - £400. Another interesting tome comes in the form of a copy of William Blake’s seminal work ‘Jerusalem the Emanation of the Giant Albion’. Featuring 100 plates depicting Blake’s prophetic visions of and dated 1804 on the spine, it is believed possibly to be one of an edition of 100 published in 1877 by John Pearson, but bears no publishing details, and carries an estimate of £300 - £500.

Also expected to get book collectors hot under the collar is a bound volume of soft ground etchings by the important Lake District artist William Green entitled ‘Green’s Lake District’. Featuring 60 double and 13 single page etchings with no text, the works are simply titled 'Drawn and engraved by William Green and published at Ambleside'; and dated variously 1808, 1809 and 1810. A very rare complete volume, the hammer is expected to fall between £300 - £500.

The final lot of particular note in the books section is a first edition copy of George Orwell’s masterpiece ‘The Road to Wigan Pier’. Published by Victor Gollancz in 1937 this hardback is bound in blue cloth and lacks its dustjacket; carrying an estimate of £60 - £100.

Model locomotives are especially well represented in the sale – the crowning glory expected to be a ‘Dorchester’ boxed Hornby Dublo 4-6-2 S.R. West Country locomotive in British Racing Green. Numbered 34042 Dorchester and Tender it is estimated at £100 - £200. Other examples include a ‘Bristol Castle’ boxed Hornby Dublo 7013 with tender expected to fetch £40 - £60; a boxed Hornby Dublo combination diesel-electric locomotive (D5713) estimated at £50 - £80 and a boxed Hornby Dublo class 8F 2-8-0 freight locomotive in black (No. 48158) complete with tender estimated at £30 - £50.

The lots are all set to come under the hammer at Cuttlestones’ Wolverhampton auction room during its Specialist Collectors’ Auction on Friday, 11th August. Viewing will take place from 10am – 7pm the day before the sale and on the morning of the sale itself.

The fully illustrated catalogue will be available at www.cuttlestones.co.uk from Friday 4th August and remote bidders can get involved in the action via live internet bidding, commission or on the telephone.
