A collection of autographs amassed by a private collector and split into 14 lots achieved an impressive total sum of over £2,000 at West Midlands’ auction house Cuttlestones’ recent Specialist Collectors’ sale.
One of the albums features autographs including Laurel and Hardy, Shiley Bassey, Lena Horne, Jack Warner, Ken Dodd and others; while another includes examples from Vanessa Redgrave, Leonard Rossiter, Ronnie Barker, Dennis Waterman, John Thaw, Peter Sallis, Barbara Windsor, James Hunt, Ginger Rodgers and many more. The inclusion of so many famous names evidently caused a stir among collectors, with strong representation in the room, on the telephone lines, by commission and live on the internet.
Another lot that performed particularly well in the sale is a WWII Japanese Officer’s Katana. The traditional sword boasts a blade length 63cm, brass tsuba with cherry blossom decoration and comes alongside a metal scabbard with leather combat cover. It fetched £550 selling to a UK-based internet bidder.
Once again, the books section contained some very exciting lots; the undoubted highlight a copy of William Blake’s seminal work ‘Jerusalem the Emanation of the Giant Albion’. Featuring 100 plates depicting Blake’s prophetic visions, dated 1804 on the spine and believed possibly to be one of an edition of 100 published in 1877 by John Pearson, it sold for £400 despite bearing no publishing details.
