Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones has reported a rise in interest in vintage record players and music in a variety of old style formats being sold through its Penkridge and Wolverhampton sale rooms.
Just last week, a retro teak cased Garran Model 301 record player with combined Revox stereo tape recorded and various examples of music sold for an impressive £1,300.
In the same sale, the hammer fell at £680 on a musical fidelity 24 bit CD player and a Pioneer TX-9100 stereo with music fidelity boxes – followed by a pair of Bowers & Wilkins speakers that made £650. Records also performed well – a box of LP records including Jane’s Addiction, Eurithmics, R.E.M and more sold for £200 while another collection of LP records – including coloured vinyl and picture disc examples covering artists including ZZ Top, Pink Floyd and The Hollies achieved £100.
Auctioneer Ben Gamble says:
“Interest really seems to be piquing not only in ‘traditional’ collectable formats but also decent quality CD and tape players. I guess like the guys who keep a record player for their vinyl collection, many of those of us who remember the days before digital music still have extensive back catalogues of tapes and CDs that they still want to listen to.
“Vinyl remains collectable – even from artists that were selling in the time of alternative formats and it’s a trend we don’t see slowing down as new generations of ‘vinyl junkies’ discover the delights of music that’s not just available at the touch of a button. Selling at auction is a great way to maximise potential revenue as all our auctions are now online and fully illustrated so can reach a potentially global audience of collectors.”
