Antique & Fine Art Sale – Auction Report 25/04/2008

Cuttlestones latest Fine Art & Antique Sale was held on Friday 25th April at their Penkridge Salerooms. Around 400 lots were offered and Auctioneer and Managing Director, Ben Gamble was pleased to see over 85% of lots finding buyers. ‘I was delighted with the turnout in the Saleroom and it was great to see lots of our past clients together with a ‘touch wood!’ new younger following looking to perhaps move away from the ‘Ikea’ look and furnish their homes with a slightly more classic and traditional feel.’

Although no four figure bids were tendered through the sale over 150 lots attracted bids of £150 plus.

The collectables section proved very popular following Cuttlestones’ decision to put images of every single lot on their website. Enquiries and condition reports on lots were received from Canada, Australia, France, China and even Cambodia!

Consigned from a West Midlands Estate, a large coin collection had not seen the light of day for years and despite being in relatively poor condition Cuttlestones’ coin expert, Adrian Simmons split it into five assorted lots and the vendor was delighted with bids totaling over £1000.

Other interesting lots included a modern cased trout at £180, an iconic Dunhill table cigarette lighter in the form of an aeroplane at £80 and a pair of Huntley and Palmer biscuit tins at £220.

Silver and jewellery proved very popular partly due to the global demand for precious metals. A hallmarked five piece tea and coffee service in good condition if not a little plain took a double estimate £550. A Georgian marrow spoon attracted £180 and a small salver taking £100.

A Gentleman’s fairly standard 9ct gold ring housed a surprise bright cut diamond of around 1.5ct, despite several very large flaws it sold over the telephone to a German buyer at £420.

One of Staffordshire’s perennial best sellers found favour with a small Beswick collection attracting over £1000 to help its vendor fund a trip to New Zealand to see her family.

A good clock and furniture section was on offer with four Longcase clocks taking bids at £690, 680, 440 and 400 respectively. A fairly late carved Black Forest hallstand decorated with three bears was deemed a must have by two private buyers and was won at £800. A Georgian mahogany circular three tier dumb waiter took a top estimate £580 and a reproduction Walnut Wellington chest £440.

Recently Cuttlestones have made a name for themselves selling Irish artwork. Although none were entered this time the pictures were again popular with private buyers, a Victorian half portrait taking £350 despite the stern look of the sitter and a Rowbotham watercolour at £280.

Cuttlestones’ next Antique and Fine Art Sale is to be held on Friday 27th June 2008 and entries are now invited. Already entered are two contempary Irish Oils on canvas and a private collection of Hornby and Triang railwayana.
