Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones saw the hammer fall on piece of British footballing history at its 27th November Fine Art & antiques sale.

A leather bound book presented to J. Eddleston Esq, vice chairman of Blackburn Rovers, following the team’s FA Cup Final victory on 21st April 1928 sold for £1,100, leaving its estimate of £300 - £500 in the shade.

The lot also included a football signed by the early 90s Blackburn squad, including Alan Shearer whose team career, between 1992 – 1996, helped the club to League victory in the 1994/1995 season. The lot sold to a telephone bidder based in Mid Wales.

Cuttlestones’ MD and head auctioneer, Ben Gamble, says:
This is a great result – we always anticipated a good amount of interest from Blackburn Rovers fans, as this represents a truly rare piece of club history, but the outcome was better than we imagined! This is the second rare footballing lot we’ve sold this year that has shattered its estimate – back in May a collection of medals and memorabilia presented to 1920s player Charlie Wilson, who played at Huddersfield Town, Tottenham Hotspurs and Stafford Rangers during his career, sold for just shy of £17,000. It just goes to show that supporters see collecting memorabilia as serious business!

Cuttlestones’ next Fine Art sale is set to take place on Friday, 5th March 2010. To consign good to auction or arrange a valuation, call 01785 714905 or visit www.cuttlestones.co.uk
