Antique & Fine Art Sale – Auction Report 27/06/2008
Cuttlestones were on their “metal” at their latest Fine Art & Antique Sale. With over four hundred lots on offer, the silver and jewellery sections were particularly buoyant, almost certainly influenced by the current demand for precious metals and the high price of gold and silver. There was a very good attendance both at the viewing and on the day of the sale, and the influence of the Internet brought commission bids from Europe, America and Japan.
In a large silver section, all but five lots were sold, with most exceeding expectations in this fluid and rising market. Moving into the jewellery section, a large private collection of heavy gold gentlemans’ jewellery was keenly competed for. An 18ct gold Gentleman’s Heavy Identity Bracelet reached £900 and various heavy 9ct Gold Gentleman’s Rings realised prices between £50 and £560. Ladies jewellery also sold strongly, with an 18ct Gold Art Deco Emerald and Diamond Ring reaching £340, an 18ct Gold and Platinum Diamond Ring for £290 and a Krugerrand pendant at £490. There has never been a better time to sell and acquire silver and gold.
The collectables section was as eclectic as ever, ranging from a cased sextant at £220, through a private collection of “O” Gauge locomotives and rolling stock from £55 to £210, to a marble urn at £220. Cuttlestones displays images of every lot on their website and this has certainly enhanced interest in the miscellania section, reaching collectors in a way that no catalogue description can do alone. The cliché “a picture is worth a thousand words” is particularly true in the area of collectables, where condition is so important. Probably one of the more unusual lots in the sale were a pair of carved wooden African Heads, which sold for £360. Enquiries and requests for condition reports on a great variety of lots were again received from all over the world.
Glass and Ceramics continue to have their ardent supporters, a Whitefriars “Drunken Bricklayer” Vase made £180 and an unusual Continental blue glass shaped dish with silvered decoration went for £100. A Minton Majolica Radish Vase sprouted a top price of £200, and a pair of Royal Doulton Lambethware Bulbous Vases swelled to £160. Oriental Ceramics sold well, the top performer being a Blue and White Double Gourd Vase at £360.
The art sections of the sale were again well supported, with a David Bates Oil on Canvas reaching £820 and an Oil on Board in the style of Letitia Marion Hamilton found favour at £320.
A good clock and furniture section included two Longcase clocks chiming in at £300 and 400 respectively and a smaller Grandmother clock taking £320. The star in the furniture section was a large Edwardian Mahogany Display Cabinet with unusual curved glazed panels, which was enthusiastically pursued to £1100, making the buyer’s day! Several lots of excellent quality reproduction oak dining furniture also sold very well to another single buyer who was obviously out to furnish their entire dining room.
Cuttlestones next Fine Art & Antique Sale is to be held on Friday 24th October, due to an upcoming Country House auction, to be held in September, details of which will be available on the Cuttlestones website in due course. Entries for the October sale are now invited.
