Specialist Football and Military Medal Collection
CASE STUDY: SPECIALIST FOOTBALL AND MILITARY MEDAL COLLECTION
SALE: Fine Art Sale 29th May 2009
LOCATION: Cuttlestones Sale Rooms, Pinfold Lane, Penkridge, Stafford
BRIEF: The sale of a collection of football and military medals awarded to 1920s footballer Charlie Wilson on behalf of the family.
THE COLLECTION: A collection of some 19 lots comprising football medals, related memorabilia and WWI medals awarded to Charlie Wilson. Born in Atherstone, Derbyshire in 1895, Charlie was a decorated WWI verteran before making his mark on the football pitches on the 1920s, playing for Tottenham Hotspur, Huddersfield Town, Stoke City and Stafford Rangers during his illustrous career.
The collection was split into five lots, broken down to reflect Charlie’s career as a bomber and at each club.
MARKETING: In addition to ‘local interest’ press releases to Staffordshire, Huddersfield and Tottenham papers, the relevant football teams’ fan clubs and websites were targeted to ensure that any keen supporters and collectors would be alerted to the sale, in addition to WWI and militaria interest groups and magazines. The resulting press coverage generated numerous pre-sale enquiries and commission bids from far and wide.
PR activity was supported by advertisments highlighting the collection in key media and on the Cuttlestones website.
SALE HIGHLIGHTS: The Huddersfield Town medals were contested fiercely, with a buyer in the saleroom overcoming the telephones with a winning bid of £8800.
THE SALE: The five lots attracted broad interest not only within the room, but from some 70 registered telephone bidders and over 100 online punters. The first lot consisted of Charlie’s war medals, which sold to a buyer in the room for £650. A Staffordshire FA cap from 1926 went to a collector on the telephone for £180 with the same purchaser netting the Spurs medals at £3700.
Next were the Huddersfield Town medals with their impressive winning bid of £8800, while final lot of Stoke City medals going to a local collector at £3400. In total, the Charlie Wilson collection realised some £16,730.
