When items linked to Wolverhampton Wanderers are consigned for sale at Cuttlestones’ Wolverhampton auction rooms, it always causes a stir among football collectors and Wolves fans alike. On 21st September, a very rare white metal and enamel vesta case marking the club’s 1908 victory over Newcastle United in the English Cup will be no exception.
Bearing the inscription "English Cup, Crystal Palace, April 1908, to commemorate Wolverhampton Wanderers Victory” with "Colman's Mustard" above and below, highlighted in blue enamel, this fascinating piece is expected to achieve in the region of £150 – £250. Cuttlestones saleroom manager, Rosie Blackburn, says:
“Wolves memorabilia has a really strong following – not only is it of interest to club supporters but there is a whole community of football memorabilia collectors and early 20th Century relics of the game tend to be especially popular. We anticipate it will generate strong interest both locally and on the internet.”
In addition to the vesta case, the sale will also see a large collection of football programmes dating from 1940s - including many Wolves and other Midlands clubs’ programmes. These will be split into two lots – the first comprising a collection of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ home fixtures programmes – 5 dating from 1943-44; 10 from 1943-45 and 23 from 1945-46, estimated to achieve £60 - £100. The second lot consists a collection of thirteen various football programmes dating from 1946-47, 1947-48 and 1948-49 for fixtures at Derby, West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle United, Huddersfield Town, Stoke City, Portsmouth, Leicester City and Birmingham City, and is expected to fetch £30 - £50.
