A collection of Christmas cards and other correspondence sent to Marie Stopes, well-known women's rights campaigner and founder of the first birth control clinic in Britain is set to come under the hammer at our Specialist Collectors’ Sale in Wolverhampton next Friday 7th December.
The first lot, contained within a large album, features examples from Stopes’ connections in the aristocracy and prominent figures of the day – including Sir George & Lady Younghusband, Commander & Mrs Clayton, the botanist Dukinfield H. Scott, Sir Arthur & Lady Duckham, Prince & Princess Vladimir Galitzine and the suffragette Maude Royden. It also a photograph of Stephen Tennant (‘the brightest of the bright young things’), dated 1928 with a greeting on the back from his mother Pamela Grey, and a card signed in pencil "From Buffkie to Dear Mumy" – presumably from her son Harry Stopes-Roe also known as "Buffkins" – who is referred to in several of the cards. It also includes an etching of Sir Charles Holroyd by Alphonse Legos. The album is expected to achieve in the region of £200 – 400.
Also hailing from the collection, but consigned as a lot in its own right, is a Christmas card to Marie dated 1935 from Ernest H Shepherd, author of Winnie the Pooh. Handwritten, signed by Shepherd and with a sketch of Winnie the Pooh it reads "Heartiest Christmas Greetings to you all from Ernest H. Shepard. The hammer is expected to fall in at around £100 – 200.
