Rare Arts & Crafts tiles fetch £1,300 at Midlands auction house

A set of fifteen tiles by the lauded Arts & Crafts ceramicist William de Morgan sold for an impressive £1,300 at our Antique & Interiors Auction at Wolverhampton Auction Rooms on Wednesday 5th June.

The set of 15cm x 15cm glazed tiles feature an intricate leaf and thistle pattern known as 'BBB' (Barnard, Bishop and Barnard) - named for the Norwich-based firm that used them extensively in the production of their cast-iron fireplaces. It remains arguably de Morgan's most popular and enduring tile design, which evidently struck a chord with collectors as online bidders jostled to secure the lot, which finally sold to a UK buyer.

Elsewhere in the sale, which featured a diverse catalogue, mid-century modern furniture performed well – a Lot 598, a retro teak ‘A. Younger Ltd’ sideboard selling for £320 and Lot 629, a retro teak dining table with four chairs seeing the hammer fall at £230, both on the internet.

Other highlights included Lot 170, comprising two domed torsion clocks that sold for £170 and Lot 128, a 1918 mounted sovereign on a yellow metal chain – the top performer in a strong gold, jewellery and watches section.
