Broken clock brings in the bids to sell for £800!

Thursday, 20 January, 2022

When it comes to antiques, condition is usually a key factor in assessing an item’s value – however, a vintage clock that has certainly seems better days was the rather surprising star lot of the 19th January sale out of our Wolverhampton Auction Rooms.

Lot 289 of a catalogue just shy of 1,000 lots, the condition report read “The movement appears to be complete but we can give no guarantee. The case is badly damaged with many losses, it is not complete” – this did not deter bidders, however, with a flurry of online interest seeing the hammer fall at £800 to a London bidder. Other highlights were varied, with the top 10 covering a rather traditional range of lots including more clocks, porcelain, furniture and silverware.

Elsewhere, however, quirkier lots also performed well – among them anatomy charts of the human skeleton – with two fetching a £180 and another also reaching £180. A small collection of china hand painted by Francis Clark (who at one time worked for Royal Worcester) fetched a total of almost £600. Folio Society books continue to be popular, with four sets fetching a total of just over £300, while Lot 224 - a vintage Corona 3 typewriter in original leather carry case, achieved £90.
