‘Fab Four’ lamp achieves a ‘fab’ price tag at auction!

‘Fab Four’ lamp achieves a ‘fab’ price tag at auction!

Friday, 22 September, 2023

A rather kitsch 1960s Beatles table lamp discovered in a house clearance sold for an impressive £950 at Staffordshire auction house Cuttlestones last week; testament to the enduring appeal of the ‘Fab Four’.

While the lamp base features a gold guitar motif on a plain black background, the lampshade is adorned with portraits of the Beatles in their 60s heyday, along with the names of hits including ‘Twist & Shout’, ‘From Me to You’, ‘Money’ and ‘She Loves You’. It sold to an online bidder for just shy of £1,000, despite the condition report clearly stating that the shade has become detached form wire frame due to the glue drying out. MD and head auctioneer, Ben Gamble, says:

“Anything to do with the Beatles remains highly collectable - but it was actually the base of this lamp that is especially rare and drove up its value. These items were originally mass-produced for the teen market and would have been a relatively cheap and cheerful purchase back in the day. However, their low perceived value at the time means that they were also seen as being pretty disposable – as fans outgrew their teenage bedrooms and trends changed, many of these items would simply have been discarded.

“It’s the kind of lot that would be easily overlooked when clearing a property or at a car boot sale, but we knew that there is a keen market out there for this kind of collectable so entered it in our Autumn Antiques and Collectables sale. It certainly didn’t disappoint and generated a significant amount of interest from global collectors on the internet.
