A SUFFRAGETTE ILLUMINATED ADDRESS NAMED TO "CLARA ELIZABETH GIVEEN", signed in black ink by Emmeline Pankhurst, printer's mark lower right for "Weiners, London, W." The lot also includes a framed watercolour inscribed to the back "Botanical Gardens, Oxford 1909 C. E. Giveen" and a small group of photographs of Clara to include one dated 25/7/45 named Elizabeth Brewster (Brewster being her married name) showing her dressed p as 'The Lord Chancellor' and a small example of her in older age dated to the back Aug. 30th 1961.¦¦Note: Clara Elizabeth Giveen (1887-1967) joined the Women's Political Union in 1910 and was soon arrested for her involvement in protests at Downing Street (released on this occasion without charge) She soon became involved in the Suffragette Window Smashing Campaign, being arrested twice and receiving two prison sentences, one of five days, the other of four months. Clara is however, best known for her part along with fellow suffragette Kitty Marion in the burning down of 'Hurst Park Grandstand' in retaliation for the death of Emily Wilding Davison who was killed at Epsom racecourse after running on the track and being trampled by the King's horse. For her part Clara was sentenced to three years imprisonment, where she was forcibly fed and then released under "The Cat & Mouse Act". ¦Clara was branded one of the most dangerous suffragettes by the police and was subject to surveillance, with her photograph widely circulated to public buildings etc.
